I would love to say no – you are okay to sit back and relax now, the money will start to roll in any day soon. Unfortunately that I cannot do as I know and you most probably already realise is that, the easy bit is completed – which is creating your blog or website and hosting it, the difficult and much more involved is the marketing and driving targeted traffic to your website or blog.
That is the bit I will try to address in this article. It is an important part of creating web presence if you are planning on making money online using your blog or website.

How to get traffic to your blog or website

To understand the concept of marketing for your blog or website let’s take a look at a conventional business model.

Joe (my fictitious entrepreneur) has recently decided to open a shop to sell books. He decides to stock the most interesting and in demand subjects. The location he chooses is on a high street with a very high foot count – of people passing by. This particular location is in a sought after area (niche) where people are always on the lookout for business opportunities.

He opens his shop and stocks it high with extremely good titles (Keywords) and prices his goods at a very affordable rate. Day one he opens his shop with bells and whistles, people walking past decide to drop by and see if there is anything they would like – Luckily he manages to sell one two books. Excited he returns the next day – again it’s not a bad day a few wonderers drop by and one or two more books are sold – this continues for a few weeks. Joe then realises that over that period his sales have been diminishing and more than 90% of his customers are chance visits by people who drop in and walk out.

By this stage the enthusiasm that Joe had initially, of running his own business is wearing thin, and he is anxiously looking at ways to improve his sales and customer base. He struggles to understand what else he needs to do. Joe sits with his wife and starts to draw out a plan of what he has already done and what more he needs to do.

Joe’s wife Jane looking at the list above quickly realises that Joe is missing some vital tasks he must do to sell his business – Jane say’s to Joe, “What marketing have you done for your business?”

To which he replies “Why do I need to do any marketing? I have opened a shop in a very visible location with plenty of passing trade and I have posters up outside my shop. What more can I do?”

Jane having studied Business Management and Marketing realises that Joe does not understand one of the key principle of running a business – that is ‘Customers’. She say’s to Joe you can have your business right up close to the customers face, and if they do not want your product then they will not come into your shop (Traffic) and unless they enter your business you will not make any sales (Clicks, CPM, Sales).

Okay, he say’s what do you recommend I do? – Jane then draws up the following list for Joe’s business:

Jane then instructs Joe to follow the above plan regularly so that he will be able to turn his business around and hopefully generate good returns.

What have we learnt from the above scenario?

Running a business is much more than just location and a friendly customer services, these two are important but there is other things that also need to be added into the mix to really benefit from operating a business. In similar manner running an online venture requires the above that Jane has identified.

You will need to adopt a marketing method if you wish to improve your chances of earning money online with your blog or website. But if on the other hand you only use a blog or website for pleasure not for setting up a passive income source then you may wish to just ignore everything in this article. It does not matter what traffic you get as long as you get pleasure from putting content online but not earning any money from it.

You may have the best blog or a wonderful website and the necessary drive, attentiveness and persistence to be able to understand how the system works. You may have all the tools necessary in maintaining the online business, including a really unique and interesting website or blog which could earn you a fortune if only the whole world could see it. However, all these would prove useless if you do not know how to drive traffic to your blog or website. The web business would quite rapidly sink together with all the sales, fortune and dreams that you might have realized if you only knew how to do this particular task – drive traffic to your website or blog.

Driving terrific to your website o blog is a difficult activity and it always takes time and dedication to achieve success. Do not be fooled by sales statements from certain vendors who claim that they would send x-thousand targeted traffic to your blog or website at a charge within days of paying them. The web as well as the affiliate marketing world has given birth to the fierce competition between affiliate marketers, each of whom has his own great product to offer at a cost.

I believe the best way to start driving traffic to your website or blog is by doing it yourself not handing over this task to a third party who charges you an x-amount per month to do what you most likely could achieve by yourself given some time.

Listed below are some very good tips on how you can start to drive targeted traffic to your blog or website.

Best way to get traffic to start with

The first way is through writing your own articles, hubs, posts, Xomba blurbs, Infobarrel or whatever it is you intend to publish. This is a very effective way in promoting a website or blog, because any well written or created unique content that is appreciated by readers will lead them to visit the writer’s very own website or blog out of sheer interest. It will also lead to recurring visits and recommendations which help’s to build your reputation and increase traffic.

The second step in driving traffic to your website or blog is by submitting it to search engines; I use a tool called Internet Business Promoter it allows me to manage the whole processes of submitting all my sites, blogs, and posts to many search engines around the globe. You don’t need this tool if you only going to submit one or two but if you wish to manage and submit a number of different ventures then it can be very useful tool to have.

Search engines can do allot of good for you if you use them correctly. They are popular with users who carry out searches online and they help in driving free targeted traffic, they should not be ignored. Having top search engine rankings is vital in building popularity links, and the use of the right keywords or tags is important in achieving this goal.

The third is by providing your existing visitors with an email or RSS subscription service, it allows you to build a list of subscribers that you can tap into and use as traffic sources for your blog or website. By using auto responders and personalised newsletters or emails is one way of keeping track of them all, and holding on to them by letting them know you care and advising them of new products and services or content that you are offering, it is an essential task that should be done by everyone who wishes to engage with their customers.

The forth way in driving traffic to your blog or website is by contacting other webmasters for a possible link exchange partnership. Locating websites that are related to one’s own website is the primary task. Once there, you should be able to establish communication by personalizing everything as much as possible. It is then possible to make reciprocal link exchanges between webmasters.

Traffic generating strategies are important in trying to build a successful online money making venture like a blog or website. It is always advantageous to plan your moves in any business that you are engaged in. This is particularly important in online businesses. If you know how to get people to see what you or your blog has to offer, then you are on the right track.

Remember the best way to get traffic to your blog or website is to do it yourself and follow the above tips as starters. As you develop more knowledge and skills then you can venture into more advanced areas of online marketing and SEO. When you start to generate income from your online business then you can invest in reputable third parties to handle your marketing activities.
