How to find Keywords and Keyword Phrases for Search Engines?

Every website developer or blog publisher wants people to visit their content once it is online, besides it would be a rather foolish waste of valuable time to publish something online just so you can see it for yourself. This is where keywords and keyword phrases come into play a big role.

When someone puts up a blog post or a web page they need traffic to their blog or website, usually a large proportion of the traffic hitting your blog or site is delivered by search engines like Google, Yahoo and the likes.

There is a specific language that search engines like to communicate in with your blog or website, this language has many forms and is usually referred to as Search Engine Optimisation (SEO). An attribute of SEO is finding, selecting ad using specific single words known as Keywords and phrases containing one or more keywords referred to as Keyword Phrases.

Selecting good targeted single keywords is important but to attract the right visitors to your Website or Blog, you need to use keyword phrases instead of just single keywords. This helps search engines match users to results that are more relevant to them. Just like a keyword is a single word used as a search query, a keyword phrase is two or more words typed as a search query. For example, ‘3 Steps to making money with Google Adsense’ is a good example of a keyword phrase.

People use search engines to find what they are looking for by searching for specific keywords or keyword phrases and choosing the most relevant result from the list provided. To drive traffic to your blog or site you want to have as many opportunities to be included in those search results as possible. In other words, you should try to use every keyword phrase that you think someone might search for in order to find your site. To start with this can be very difficult, but my suggestion is to study the techniques, apply and learn then improve your selection process.

Usually when people do a search using Google, Bing or something similar, they type in a keyword phrase instead of just a single keyword. It is said that almost fifty-eight percent of search queries are three words or longer. So having keyword phrases on your blog or website increases your chance of a higher page rank. The click-through rate (this is how many people click your listing to go to your site) also increases, due to more words or keyword phrases matching the search query. Your conversion rate (how many of your visitors actually purchase something, sign up, or take whatever action is appropriate on your site like clicking you Google Adsense ads) also increases because you’re more likely to have what the user is looking for.

Users looking for things using search engine are becoming savvier as time goes on, and they have learnt that a single keyword is probably going to be too broad a search to return the results they're looking for. A good example is what happens when you do a search for ‘car’. You might be in need of a ‘car insurance service’, but doing a quick search on Google with the keyword ‘car’ gives you a varied result with thousands of possible options but none of the results are specific to what you are looking for, requiring you to sift through the list. Using the keyword phrase ‘car insurance service’, on the other hand, turns up results listing businesses that offer that service.

Now you can see why it’s a very good idea to have proper keyword phrases, and not just single keywords, on your Web pages or Blog posts. Your keyword phrase ‘car insurance service’ could be used as a heading for your paragraphs, placed in the Heading tags (HTML tags used for paragraph headings) or as the title of your Web page (using the Title tag in the HTML code).

A good idea is to use simple, everyday language that you or other searchers are likely to type in to Google Search box. As a general rule, you should include multiple uses of each keyword phrase, enough to be prominent on the page without forcing your keywords into your content. You want it to mention each keyword a couple of times while making sure that it still sounds natural.

You should try to avoid using only general phrases; be sure to include detailed descriptive words as well. If your keywords are too general, they are likely to be up against too much competition from other websites and blogs targeting the same keywords or phrase. However, if your keywords are too specific, fewer people search for those terms, resulting in fewer potential visitors. It’s a balancing act, and the rules aren’t hard and fast – as I said before try something, monitor the outcome and then refine. You need to find the right mix for your site by finding the keywords and phrases that bring traffic that actually convert visitors to purchasers.

When putting keywords in the content of your site, make sure the words surrounding them are also good, searchable keywords.

Keywords and phrases can all be used as headings for paragraphs or as links to their own pages. Remember, search engines also look for keywords in hypertext links (where clicking a word or phrase takes you to another page within the Web site) within the page, and using a search phrase within the hyperlink leads to a higher search rank for that phrase.

You should also still include stop words (very common words such as the, a, to, if, who, and so forth, which serve to connect ideas but don't add much in the way of meaning to your content) in your search phrases. Plus, you don’t want your Web site text to sound like machine language — “Come shop car all your needs done.” Instead, you want your Web site to sound like English; your true readers (visitors/traffic) are real people, after all. You also don’t want to give the search engines the impression that you’re keyword stuffing; they’re expecting natural-sounding text, which means full sentences.

Remember Keywords and Keyword Phrases are for search engines but how you use them and in what context make’s it legible by people and keeps the traffic flowing to your website or blog.
